Introducing Pravan Pediatrics

Addressing the Problem

There are few things more important than our kids’ health, and Puerto Rico is suffering from an alarming shortage of pediatricians. In the last decade, there has been a 50% reduction in the number of pediatricians providing services on the island. In the aftermath of hurricane Maria and Covid-19, most of them moved to the mainland, where they could earn more money and have better access to resources.

This exodus has resulted in a deterioration of pediatric care. Pediatrician appointments, for instance, can take weeks or months to be arranged, and on appointment days waiting times average from three to four hours. Additionally, reaching your pediatrician after 3:00p.m. or during weekends is nearly impossible. However, face-to-face time is rarely longer than five minutes. The situation is made worse by the fact that pediatricians who accept health insurance are required to see a significant number of patients in order to be paid adequately.

Redefining Pediatric Care

Pravan Kids offers an alternative to the broken pediatric healthcare system by reshaping the way care is delivered. Pravan Kids is the first Concierge Pediatric Clinic on the island, with a heavy focus on accessibility, convenience, and personalized services. Pediatric care will be revolutionized for the better.

Health Maintenance and Well Child Visits:

This preventive evaluation includes developmental and behavioral assessment, a complete physical exam, growth and weight tracking, and the corresponding anticipatory guidance discussion. Screening tests, labs, and procedures will be ordered according to the patient’s age.

The main goal is to ensure that the parents have an opportunity to meet with their pediatrician, have their child examined, and discuss issues that arise at different stages of development. The pediatrician will also ensure that your child is protected from infectious diseases by reviewing and updating his or her immunizations.

During teenage years, well-child visits also offer adolescents the opportunity to discuss their concerns, encouraging them to take responsibility for their health.

Evaluation and Treatment of Acute Illness:

Children get sick. When your child is ill, the acute illness visit provides the opportunity for a focused assessment and physical exam to diagnose and provide treatment for a particular health concern affecting the child.

Management of Chronic Childhood Disease:

When children have chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes, and developmental disabilities, including ADHD and Autism, among others, the pediatrician, frequently in communication with other pediatric subspecialists, will provide integrated care to the child, support to the family and will follow up patient’s condition between visits to pertinent subspecialists.

Growth Tracking:

Growth charts are used to compare your child’s height, weight, and head size against children of the same age, as they grow to provide early warning that your child has a medical problem.

New Facilities:

We’re building a 4,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art pediatrics clinic for you and your children right next door to Pravan. Built with your children’s wellbeing and commodity needs in mind.

Development Guidance and Monitoring:

Close monitoring and early detection of developmental variance are essential to provide a greater chance for your child to reach their full potential. Through direct observation and with some standardized tools, the milestones achievement progress of your children can be assessed, and early intervention can be provided when required.

Breastfeeding Guidance:

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six (6) months of age. But even if the mother has experience in breastfeeding, lactation sometimes can be difficult. Your pediatrician can help parents with issues like milk supply and storage, sore nipples and breastfeeding positions.

Infant Safety Recommendations:

The pediatrician will discuss timely guidelines for keeping your child safe at home.

Infant Sensory Stimulation Coaching:

Sensory stimulation is vital to develop sensory pathways in the brain and thus promotes normal development. It provides essential touch stimulation and helps babies to learn about themselves. At birth, touch is the baby’s most developed sense. It can be soothing and nurturing. The goal is to teach parents how to provide this unique sensory experience, helping them to establish an even deeper bond with the baby while stimulating the infant toward healthy development.

  • 5 Pediatric Healthcare Challenges in Puerto Rico, and How Pravan Kids Solve Them
    by fiarah.carrau@pravanhealth.com (Fiarah J. Carrau) on February 8, 2024 at 5:55 pm

There are little things more frustrating in Puerto Rico than trying to make a medical appointment. Primary care doctors, specialists, and more have become harder to find, and many are not accepting new patients. This panorama has also become a reality when it comes to pediatric care.    A study conducted in 2011 to analyze the pediatricians' profile in Puerto Rico revealed that the median age of pediatricians in Puerto Rico was 54 years old (compared with 42 and 43 years old in the mainland US). Ten years later, the Puerto Rico Pediatrics Society (SPP by its acronym in Spanish) showed that 49% of pediatricians on the island are over 60 years old, that the median age for retirement is 67, and that 28% of the 331 pediatricians who completed the survey have a general pediatric practice in two municipalities or more. In addition, health insurance companies have not increased their premiums in 25 years, affecting pediatricians and the number of medical students who decide to major in general pediatrics, favoring subspecialties and threatening the stability of pediatrics in Puerto Rico. The plot thickens when you add hospitals in the mix and the lack of urgent and around-the-clock care on the island. We’ve talked to a lot of parents, and these are their top five pediatric health challenges (and how Pravan Kids addresses them):

The first five years of a child's life mark a period of rapid brain development, shaping their cognitive abilities and future success. During this critical phase, over a million neural connections form daily, with the environment and experiences playing a pivotal role in this intricate process. Nutrition is also one of the key factors influencing brain development. In this blog, we will delve into the impact of nutrition on a child's brain development, the challenges of providing balanced meals for young children, and the role of healthy snacks in ensuring optimal cognitive growth.
